Before I launch into my regular list of highlights, I want you to pause and realize how important this playground is as a symbol of what childhood play could and should be. And children will see room to roam and spaces to fill with forts and hideouts. Memberships are also available and are valid for 365 days from the date of purchase. Central Park has 21 playgrounds that are unique in design and character. Most of them were built in the 1930s as part of a system of playgrounds located along the Park perimeter. The Conservancy regularly updates these spaces to include new equipment and infrastructure that reflect changing ideas about children’s play and safety and accessibility standards. This playground, the upper of the two playgrounds at West 67th Street, provides innovative adventure features such as a stone sand fortress and a water feature set on a large compass. You’ve probably read this very popular article from The Atlantic called “The Overprotected Kid” from April 2014 which argues in favor of adventure playgrounds and risk taking in childhood.

The first playground on this site, just north of the West 67th Street entrance, was originally built in the 1930s. In 1966, the architect Richard Dattner redesigned the playground as Adventure Playground.
I don’t want you to ever take for granted the community activism, progressive planning and design, and governmental support that this project represents. Of course, no one got everything they wanted — budget constraints, liability concerns, and timeliness all played a role in the final version. The adventure playground is partially accessible and the building is fully accessible. This playground is appropriate for every age, but the big tunnel slide and high points on the play structure might be more suited to kids 5 and up.
